Tooth Extraction

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which Dr. Farahi removes one or more teeth from the mouth. Tooth extractions are typically performed to remove decayed, damaged, or otherwise problematic teeth. The goal of this treatment is to preserve natural teeth by removing teeth that can impact one’s oral health. Dr. Farahi makes every effort to preserve your natural teeth, although sometimes an extraction is necessary.

Reasons for a tooth extraction include:

  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be restored
  • Broken or fractured teeth that cannot be restored
  • Severe gum disease (periodontitis) that has caused the teeth to become loose
  • Abscessed tooth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Overcrowding

The Procedure

During a tooth extraction, you will be given a local anesthetic to keep you calm and comfortable during the procedure. At SmileMcLean Dentistry, Dr. Farahi performs what are known as simple extractions. During a simple extraction, Dr. Farahi will grasp the tooth with dental forceps and rock it back and forth to loosen it. He will also use a special elevator tool to gradually lift the tooth from the socket. The entire tooth will then be removed in one piece. Since your mouth is numb, you will only feel pressure and no pain.

After your appointment, Dr. Farahi will provide you with postoperative directions to follow. These instructions can vary, but will generally include:

  • avoiding certain foods
  • keeping the extraction site clean
  • taking prescribed medications
  • avoiding smoking, drinking alcohol, or drinking through a straw
